15 hatchbacks & sedans with the BIGGEST price drops post-GST (Mumbai Prices)

Yesterday, we brought you a list of 10 SUVs that had seen a drop in price post the implementation of GST (Goods and Service Tax). Here are 15 hatchbacks and sedans that have also gotten cheaper.

Skoda Octavia

The Octavia is one vehicle that ticks almost all boxes. It looks elegant, has a wide range of engine and transmission options to suit everyone’s needs, is spacious and well loaded too. While the Octavia will be getting a facelift sometime this month, prices are down as much as Rs 3.24 lakhs on the existing car. The vehicle is on offer in 3 engine options, a base petrol which is a 1.4 liter TSI unit making 148 Bhp and 250 Nm, while the top spec petrol is the 1.8 liter TSI unit making 178 Bhp and 250 Nm. The diesel is a 2.0 liter unit making 141 Bhp and 320 Nm, It can be had in both manual and automatic variants.

Toyota Corolla Altis

The Altis also gets a massive price drop of up to Rs 2.07 lakhs, but unlike the other models mentioned here, it is more so on the petrol variant than the diesel variant, which gets a 1.57 lakh rupee dicoun. The petrol vehicle is powered by a 1.8 liter engine making 138 Bhp and 173 Nm. The diesel on the other hand is a 1.4 liter unit which produces 87 Bhp and 205 Nm. The Corolla is the vehicle for those who want rear seat comfort and peace of mind, when it comes to ownership and maintenance.

Hyundai Elantra

The recently launched Hyundai Elantra has been creating a storm in the market, since its launch. The Elantra not only looks good, but is spacious and well equipped too. Power comes from either a 1.6 liter diesel engine which makes 126 Bhp and 259 Nm or a 2.0 liter petrol unit which makes 150 Bhp and 190 Nm. The Elantra, which is the company’s flagship sedan has seen a drop in price of upto Rs 1.82 lakhs.

Hyundai Verna

The Verna is all-set to get a major update sometime this month. Till then, if you wish to buy the existing one, prices have gone down by as much as Rs 1.24 lakhs. The Verna can be had in both petrol and diesel. The diesel is the same 1.6 liter unit which powers the Elanta, and makes 126 Bhp and 259 Nm, while the petrol is also a 1.6 liter unit which makes 121 Bhp and 158 Nm.

Toyota Innova Crysta

The most popular MPV of India, the Crysta too has had a reduction in price of upto Rs 1.19 lakhs. The Crysta can be had with either a petrol or a diesel engine option. The petrol is the same 2.7 liter unit on the Fortuner, which produces 164 Bhp and 245 Nm. The diesel on the other hand is a 2.4 liter unit which produces 148 Bhp and 343 Nm, while the diesel automatic is a 2.8 liter unit making 172 Bhp and 360 Nm.

VW Vento

The Vento too has seen a massive drop in price of upto Rs 97,000. The Vento gets a whole range of engine options. You have a 1.2 liter TSI engine, for those who want a fun and fast petrol offering, you have the 1.6 liter MPI petrol for those who want a larger engine and then you have the 1.5 liter TDI engine with either a manual or a DSG. The 1.2 liter unit makes 103 Bhp and 175 Nm, while the 1.6 liter unit makes 103 Bhp and 153 Nm and the diesel makes 108 Bhp and 250 Nm.

Skoda Rapid

The Rapid has recently been updated and is a very good value for money proposition. The vehicle now gets a drop of upto Rs 90,000. The Rapid can be had in 2 engine options, the 1.6 liter petrol making 103 Bhp and 153 Nm and the diesel 1.5 liter unit making 108 Bhp and 250 Nm. Both the petrol and diesel offer automatic as well as manual transmission options.

Maruti Baleno

This brings us to the first hatchback on this list, that too being a popular one. The Baleno has gotten a massive drop of upto Rs 78,000. The vehicle can be had with either a 1.0 liter turbo petrol unit, a 1.2 liter petrol engine or a 1.3 liter diesel engine. The newly launched 1.0 makes 101 Bhp and 150 Nm, while the normal 1.2 makes 83 Bhp and 115 Nm and the diesel makes 74 Bhp and 190 Nm.

Toyota Etios

The Etios seems to be the compact sedan which has gotten the biggest price drop. The Etios is now cheaper by upto Rs 76,000. This is the only compact sedan which is larger than 4-meters.  Power comes from either a 1.5 liter petrol or a 1.4 liter diesel. While the petrol produces 88 Bhp and 132 Nm, the diesel produces 67 Bhp and 170 Nm. The main USP of the Etios has to be the space and the comfort that is offered.

Maruti Ciaz

While the petrol Ciaz, which is powered by a 1.4 liter engine is now cheaper by Rs 69,000, the diesel, which is equipped with the SHVS mild hybrid system is now more expensive, due to the removal of the incentives which the vehicle got previously. The petrol Ciaz makes 91 Bhp and 130 Nm, while the diesel makes 89 Bhp and 200 Nm.

Maruti Ignis

Maruti’s latest hatchback, the Ignis also gets cheaper by upto Rs 68,000. The Ignis is a funky little vehicle that is aimed at the youth. It is cool to look at, has a large amount of customization options, is spacious and has a lot of engine and transmission options. The Ignis can be had with either a 1.2 liter petrol making 83 Bhp and 115 Nm, or the 1.3 liter diesel engine making 74 Bhp and 190 Nm. Both engines be had with a manual and an AMT option.

Fiat Linea

Fiat’s Linea is one sedan that is less spoken about. While it is very capable and fun to drive, it still doesn’t sell enough. Fiat recently reduced the prices of the Linea, which made it a steal and now, with the drop of upto Rs 68,000, it certainly makes a lot of sense. The Linea can be had with a 1.3 liter diesel engine making 92 Bhp and 209 Nm and a 1.4 liter turbo petrol unit making 123 Bhp and 208 Nm. There is also a 1.4 liter base petrol engine which makes 89 Bhp and 115 Nm.

Toyota Etios Liva

The Liva is a practical hatchback that is spacious, efficient and cheap on the wallet. The Liva will now be cheaper by up to Rs 57,000. Powering the Liva is either a 1.2 liter petrol engine making 79 Bhp and 104 Nm, or a 1.4 liter diesel engine making 67 Bhp and 170 Nm.

Maruti Dzire

Maruti recently launched the all-new Dzire. The new vehicle looks a lot more like a proper sedan, rather than a hatchback with a boot bolted on. It is well equipped, looks good and has all it takes to stay on top. The Dzire will now be cheaper by Rs 53,000. Power comes from the same 1.2 liter petrol and 1.3 liter diesel engines, that power the Ignis and the Baleno.  The petrol makes 83 Bhp and 113 Nm while the diesel makes 74 Bhp and 190 Nm.

VW Polo GT

The GT Twins, which restarted the hot hatch segment in the Indian market are now cheaper by upto Rs 46,000. The petrol GT is powered by the 1.2 liter TSI unit making 103 Bhp and 175 Nm, while the diesel GT is powered by a 1.5 liter unit making 108 Bhp and 250 Nm. Where the diesel comes with a manual, the automatic comes with a 7-speed DSG.

Note: Luxury cars like Audi, Jaguar too have dropped prices by a considerable margin. However, this list pertains only to mass market cars.
